Summer is winding down and it’s time to start thinking about how you will need to change your workout routine to fit the changing season. Will you train more outside in the cooler air? Or will you take it indoors to your local gym? No matter what direction you decide to go for your fall workouts, you want to make sure you will keep up with it.
Keep it Fun
Be realistic with your workout goals. No one is going to stick with a routine that they can’t stand. If you don’t like to swim, or don’t know how, it’s not a good idea to make that a part of your workout.
Make sure you include activities that you really love. If you like being part of a team, join a local league. Even if you’re not particularly good at sports, as long as you’re moving and doing your best you are still getting exercise. Whatever activities you end up doing, make sure you drink plenty of water!
The more you enjoy your workout routine, the more likely you are to stick with it.
Know Exactly You Want
“Getting healthy” is certainly a worthwhile goal to have, but you should have smaller, more specific goals in mind. While it might be your goal to lose 50 pounds, try setting short-term goals to reach along the way. Maybe there’s a favorite pair of pants you’d like to fit into, or you’d like to be able to bench-press a few more pounds. Setting clear goals for yourself will help you on your weight loss journey.
Hold Yourself Accountable
It takes hard work and discipline to reach health and weight loss goals, so create a system to hold yourself accountable. We all have good and bad days, just make sure the bad days don’t throw you off course.
A checklist will help you keep track of your individual workout goals. There are several applications that you can download to your smartphone that will help you with this. Some of these apps will even pair with activity monitors that will track exactly how many calories you’ve burned and keep track of whether you’ve hit your daily goal or not.
If you do your workout routine with a partner, they can help to hold you accountable and you can do the same for them. A lot of workout routines are well-suited to partners anyway. Dancing is a great example of this.
